Performs protective services work enforcing laws, investigating crimes, controlling traffic, collecting evidence, preparing reports, issuing warrants and summons; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned departmental supervisor.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working in high, precarious places; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Enforcing laws; investigating crimes; controlling traffic; collecting evidence; issuing warrants and summons; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
Operates a patrol vehicle or walks on an assigned shift, to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order.
Interviews victims and witnesses.
Assists with investigating crimes; helps collect evidence; conducts searches; investigates traffic accidents.
Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; issues traffic citations; serves warrants, summons, etc.
; completes arrest records.
Makes arrests; prepares reports; testifies in court.
Provides police escorts, directs traffic; performs residential and commercial checks.
Participates in various in-service and special training programs.
Responds to and investigates domestic disputes; assists other law enforcement agencies when requested or assigned.
Ensures all evidence is properly tagged and logged.
May be assigned specific collateral duties such as administrative, community policing, crime prevention, narcotics, criminal investigation, tactical response unit, etc.
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; some knowledge in the use of standard office equipment; some knowledge of the equipment required for the position; some knowledge in the use of standard office software; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; ability to make arithmetic computations; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of an automobile; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
Possession of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement certification upon hire.
Obtain Firearms, Radar/Lidar, Law Enforcement Driver and Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch certifications within six months of employment.
Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
